How to patch test skincare

A patch test takes three minutes to set up and can save weeks of recovery. Most people do it incorrectly, so here is the version that actually tells you something.

The 48-hour method

Apply a small amount of the product to the inner forearm or behind the ear and leave it for 24 hours without washing. Check at 24 and 48 hours for redness, itching or bumps.

For facial products, a patch on the jawline for three nights is a better proxy than the forearm.

What counts as a reaction

Itching, spreading redness, swelling or blisters mean stop and rinse. Mild tingling that fades within a minute is common with actives but is not a clean pass for sensitive skin.

If you have severe reactions, seek professional advice.

Make the test meaningful

Test one product at a time, and note the date. Without that, you cannot tell which product caused trouble.

Delayed reactions can take days, so extend observation for very reactive skin.

Who needs to be most careful

People with a history of reactions, eczema-prone skin or fragrance sensitivity should patch-test everything new, including products labelled gentle. Do not test on broken skin.

If a product contains a known allergen for you, skip the test entirely and choose an alternative.
