How to build a skincare routine that works
The best routine is the one you repeat. This framework starts with four steps, shows how to add a fifth only when you need it, and explains the order so you can adapt it to any products you already own.
The four-step framework
Morning protects. Evening repairs. Between them, four steps do nearly all the work: cleanse, treat, moisturize and protect (SPF in the morning only).
Everything else — toners, essences, masks — is optional until this base has been steady for a month.
Choose products by skin type, not by trend
Oily skin tends to like gel cleansers and gel-cream moisturizers; dry skin prefers cream cleansers and ceramide creams; combination skin can zone — lighter on the T-zone, richer on the cheeks; sensitive skin should start fragrance-free and mineral.
If you are unsure of your type, run a skin type scan and look at T-zone versus cheeks over two weeks.
Add actives in the right order
Pick the one concern that bothers you most and match it to one active: BHA for congestion, retinol for texture and lines, azelaic acid for redness and marks, vitamin C for dullness.
Introduce it two nights a week, then add a night every two weeks if skin is comfortable. Never add two new actives in the same fortnight.
A realistic first month
Week one: cleanse, moisturize, SPF. Week two: add your treatment twice weekly. Week three: hold steady. Week four: review scans and decide whether to increase, swap or stay.
If something stings for more than a minute, rinse it off and drop back a step; irritation is information, not a rite of passage.
Common ways routines go wrong
Too many steps, too many actives, no sunscreen and constant switching are the four big ones. A routine you cannot sustain on a tired Tuesday will not help you.
Keep a stripped-down version (cleanse, moisturizer, SPF) for busy or irritated days.
Morning vs evening priorities
Morning is about defense: light hydration and SPF that you will reapply if you are outdoors. Evening is about repair: remove the day, then one treatment, then seal with moisturizer.
If evenings feel heavy, move richer creams to night only and keep a gel-cream for daytime. If mornings feel greasy, swap to a fluid SPF and skip heavy oils before noon.
Frequently asked questions
What order should skincare products go in?
Thinnest to thickest: cleanser, water-based serum, thicker serum, moisturizer, then SPF in the morning.
How many steps does a good routine need?
Three to five. More only helps if each step solves a specific problem.
When should I add a new product?
After four stable weeks and only one at a time, with a patch test first.
Do I need a toner?
Only if it does a clear job (hydrate or mild exfoliate). It is optional once cleanse, treat, moisturize and SPF are solid.
Can I skip moisturizer if I have oily skin?
Usually no — a light gel moisturizer can reduce rebound oil. Skip rich balms on the T-zone instead.
